yes!! tbh i dont thinknany adaptation ive seen so far (the movie or what ive heard about the musical) does dally and johnnys relationship justice. like they love each other soooo muuuuch

the musical absolutely does not, and that's what's been bugging me ever since i've heard it. to me the saddest thing about johnny and dally's deaths is that both trusted and loved each other and wanted to get out of the situation quickly, but together, and for them to die after struggling during the whole story hurts a lot.

in the musical, johnny's death feels flat because they didn't elaborate in their dynamic nor made them "special" as the book does– and dally's relationship with johnny feels the same as everyone else's as they both have no more than one scene interacting just with each other. i think you'd be moved if you knew about the characters beforehand, but I don't think it would work for someone who sees it for the first time, at least that's how it happened in my experience! i'm not trying to discredit the musical in any way because again i love it, the cast puts a lot of emotion in their shows (especially johnny and dally's in their respective songs oh my god the way i CRIED), it's specifically the script i have a problem with, it could've been better.

don't know if it's something worth mentioning but i enjoy musicals and that's how I found out the outsiders, so i know how it can be a medium that can make the audience feel numb when a character dies, and i was surprised with the outsiders because they didn't really accomplished that???? again, i think it only works if you knew about the characters before because you're already attached to them, but someone who sees it for the first time? i don't think so.

but that's the only aspect I have a problem with, the musical has a lot of strengths as well, and one of them is the way they handled the curtis brothers storyline, but that's a completely different topic!!

as for the movie I HAVEN'T WATCHED IT YET!! all I've heard is that dally and johnny also don't have a lot of scenes together so I didn't feel motivated, but just from what i could tell i don't think it's an adaptation that makes their relationship justice! as you said, they love each other so much, come on, what's an 80s movie if it doesnt have a little bit of queercoding? the movie does have it already for those with the eyes to see yeah, but the book is like the bible compared to the movie.

sorry for the rambling but those were my honest thoughts!! didn't know it would end up being that long. i don't want to sound like a bitter johnny/dally shipper (even though i am) but no one can deny that what they had was special and the adaptations weren't exactly accurate with their dynamic

• literally the definition of that song where the line is like “I just can’t come between them, they got their own thing”

• no one will ever truly understand their bond, it’s just a known thing that Dally and Johnny are the most important people in the world to each other

• they honestly can’t even pinpoint when they developed feelings for each other, they’ve just always felt so much love and affection toward each other so strongly, they just didn’t know it was mutual for awhile

• one night Dally and Johnny were taking a walk because Johnny had been down all day and even though he didn’t say it, Dally just knew and was determined to get him talking. So they’re walking in silence for awhile until Dally asks, “so are you gonna tell me what’s the matter, johnnycakes?” and Johnny just breaks down. He hadn’t let himself cry in a long time before that and the way Dally spoke to him was so genuine and concerned that he couldn’t hold back anymore. He told Dally that he didn’t know how much longer he could keep living like this and that everyone would probably just be better off without him and Dally is livid, not at Johnny, but because he doesn’t deserve to feel this way. So he tells him that he better not hear him say that ever again because he can’t live without him and “if you go, I’m coming with you.” And Johnny just looks at him for awhile because Dally makes him feel more wanted than anyone ever has. And in the heat of the moment, they share a kiss. That night they talked and while they both knew they wouldn’t be able to publicly be together, they only wanted each other, so they would take what they could get. No one else mattered to them anyway as long as they have each other

• Johnny will stay with Dally at Buck’s a lot and they’ll both squish into his twin bed. The only problem is, Dally moves a lot in his sleep, so Johnny has to be sandwiched between Dally and the wall or else he’ll accidentally be pushed off ✋😭

• they love going on drives together when Buck lets him have the car. Dally can do a really good Elvis impression and Johnny will take that to the grave because he knows if he tells anyone Dally will stop doing it

• speaking of Buck, he knows about jally because he walked in on them making out one time. That was one of the few times that Dally was genuinely scared, not even for himself, but for Johnny. He didn’t want to put Johnny in any type of danger ever. But Buck actually likes Dally a lot and cares about him, so all he said was “make sure to lock your door if you don’t want company” and they could both breathe again

• the gang was like. Not surprised whatsoever. They didn’t even rly tell them formally, they just figured if anyone reacts badly they’ll cross that bridge when they get there. So they just started being physically closer and kissing and stuff around the gang and they’re all like “about time”

• around the holidays at the Curtis house they always “coincidentally” wind up under the mistletoe. Total coincidence. Not because Soda keeps moving it.

• Johnny calls him Dallas when he’s exasperated with him 😭 so like at least a few times a day

• speaking of exasperated, the gang cannot stand playing football w them anymore bc they’re on opposing teams and literally can’t keep their hands off each other. Jally will tackle each other when it’s not even necessary just so they can be touching. “Oh wow Dal like how did I end up on top of you sorry about that 🤭” Ponyboy mad as hell because Johnny isn’t paying attention and Darry is carrying their team 😭

• will share clothes without realizing it bc a lot of their stuff looks the same. Like they’ll both have the same black shirt and sometimes they’ll be out wearing each other’s and the only way to tell is because Dally’s is a little big on Johnny and Johnny’s is tight on Dal but they never seem to notice

• Dally gave Johnny his ring and he wears it on a chain as a necklace

• cleaning each other up after rumbles 🥺 and Dally’s always like gushing over him like “glory John I didn’t know you had all that in you you looked so tuff out there” and you can hear Ponyboy like gagging in the background

• he’s a hater as if he and Curly aren’t the absolute worst either

• always napping together. Just laying in bed or on the Curtis’ couch or wherever honestly next to each other and just sleeping 😴

• Dally’s always trying to make sure Johnny gets enough to eat

• when Dally jockeys Johnny will come hang out with him when he cleans the stables after and tell him how good he did. He always comes to watch Dally, he never misses a rodeo 🥰

• Johnny likes to play with Dally’s hair since he canonically doesn’t grease it. He thinks is so soft and fluffy and Dally’s just like “my hair’s tuff Johnny 😒” and Johnny’s like “whatever you say Dal”

• modern day Pony would record himself third wheeling jally and make a TikTok to that sound that’s like “mama y papa”

Ponyboy Curtis:

A pyromantic, he loves fire (Until the church shit)

Has a fucking terrifying glare, but only actually glares at people when they wake him up (His poor brothers)

Should not be left alone around a stack of books (He’ll read them all in like two hours)

A really fast reader, but he reads the book over and over again to the point he basically memorizes it

Major third wheel, doesn’t matter if the ship is Jally, or Stevepop, or something else, he’s just a third wheel at heart

Definitely reads the book before he watches the movie 

Sometimes when he wants to write he just can’t, so he does other things instead, but once he’s in the zone, he’ll write for hours without hearing anything around him (He’s just like me fr)

Sarcastic and sassy af sometimes (Because I want him to be, no other reason)

He likes grandma hobbies (You know what I’m talking about, the knitting, sewing kinds of stuff, crafting thingies)

He would be the kind of person who helps you get your locker unstuck when you are either too scared to ask a strong person, or you don’t want your locker beaten into scraps when you could just ask Ponyboy

Cooks sometimes, he ain’t the best, but he isn’t terrible at it (He especially does it if Darry looks like he had a long day)

Cries when needs to sign parent approval forms for Ponyboy, but if someone’s close by he tries to hold it in

Has a favorite book, it’s one his father got him before he died

He doesn’t like to read, but sometimes Ponyboy will read the book to him

Has shit eyesight, but refuses to get glasses

Darry doesn’t take care of himself when he gets sick

Darry is a fucking CLINGY person when he’s emotional (Specifically sad or stressed), like you ARE NOT able to get away from that man when he’s like that (Especially Ponyboy)

Doesn’t smoke at all so it doesn’t ruin his body

Stole a shirt from his dad’s closet before he died, it’s still in his clothes but he never wears it or puts it back 

Sometimes Darry sobs into his dad’s shirt after a hard day (The shirt from above)

Impulsive biter, just like if someone sticks their hand or arm in front of his face, he wont think and just chomps on them (Ponyboy and Sodapop try to warn the others, but they don’t listen)

Dallas loves tussling Ponyboy’s hair, not quite playing with it, but messing with it enough to get a little glare from Pony.

Dallas randomly stops by the school to pick Johnny and Pony up and get them to ditch with him, usually to DQ’s or some diner. 

It pisses Darry off.

Pony will sometimes sketch Dallas and Johnny cuddling after they’ve fallen asleep. 

The gang doesn’t know, as per Dallas’ request, but if it were just Pony and Johnny they would have come out to the gang by now.

They don’t mind keeping it secret, having this special little thing between them that no one else gets to see.

Johnny wears Dally’s st christopher, but always hides it under his shirt. 

Dallas always makes up a story about ‘some broad’ when anyone asks him why his necklace is missing, but he ends up lowkey describing either Johnny or Ponyboy each time (for example “nah she’s got this big doe eyes, like a sad puppy’ or ‘she loves reading. Crazy, man.’)

Dallas HATES reading, and doesn’t understand why his boyfriends love it, but he actually secretly likes when either of them read to him. 

Dallas will lift books for them. One time Two-Bit caught him and now teases him for it. 

They each have a little heart on one of their shoes with the other two’s initials on it. Poyboy wrote each of them, since he has the best handwriting. 

Ponyboy gets to wear Dallas’ ring, but similar to Johnny, he wears it on a chain around his neck and hides it under his shirt. 

They sometimes go to the lot together, all three of them, and at first Pony was afraid he’d be irritated by Dallas breaking the silence every two seconds, but he actually doesn’t mind it. Sure it’s not the same as him and Johnny sitting there together quietly, but he actually kind of likes it this way. 

Dallas doesn’t understand why his boyfriends like the quiet so much, but he tries to respect it. He can’t help it though if he wants to crack a few jokes or mess with Pony’s hair or give Johnny a light shove every now and then. He’s pretty restless, but they haven’t reprimanded him or anything for being obnoxious yet. 

Not only did Dallas reluctantly agree to join them and watch sunsets, but he actually secretly started liking them

One time Dallas caught himself watching a sunset alone and got really sad bc neither of his partners were there to see it. He thought the sunset was wasted on him bc his boyfriends would’ve liked it more than he does. 

Dallas still drives and lives recklessly, but he’s a bit more careful now. He’ll catch a glimpse of the heart on his shoe or his ringless finger and remember he has something to live for now. Two somethings. 

Pony and Dally hang out one-on-one the least out of the three of them. Sometimes Johnny tries to get them to bond, and they do, but they like it a lot better with him there too. 

Pony and Dally really only bond one-on-one when talking about Johnny and having a cigarette.

Pony grows to actually like how unconventionally attractive Dallas is. He’s unique to draw. 

Pony writes down all (if any) stories Dallas shares about his time in New York. Usually all he gets is small remarks and basically table-scraps worth of stories, but he’s always trying to urge more information. He thinks it’s fascinating. Like they’ll be talking about something and Dallas will go “oh yeah I remember military camp” and Johnny and Pony will just stare like 0-0

Dallas still flirts in public with girls, but never gets further than that usually. There have been a few times however, where he’s been unfaithful to Pony and Johnny, as to be expected. He’s slept with other people, kissed other people, etc. 

Johnny is more upset about it than he lets on, and if Pony weren’t there, he would have just accepted it and moved on.

Pony was the one to push the “are we exclusive?” conversation, which led to Dallas getting frustrated and storming out

He wasn’t really mad at them, more mad at himself for not realizing that they wanted to be exclusive. 

They broke up for a while, but eventually Johnny managed to pull them back together.

Johnny’s kind of the mediator in the relationship. He’s their glue. 

Every time Dally fucks up or Pony gets frustrated, he’s there seeing both sides.

Sometimes he feels trapped in the middle

In the end though, they always come back together. Dallas never apologizes, as that wouldn’t be true to him to do, but he does try to change for the better, for them. Pony still sometimes thinks Dallas is scary, maybe a bit too real, but it’s in a different way now. Dallas is scary, but Pony is safe with him, Dallas would never intentionally hurt him. And Johnny loves both of them uniquely. They’re both so different but he loves them so much. Pony’s gentler, more thoughtful side, as well as Dallas’ rugged, rebellious side.

my first thought is action (dally) + compliments (johnny) + vulnerability (both)

dally definitely seeks johnny out when he's not got other stuff going on, he wants/needs to know where johnny is, that he's okay. he worries about him. but also he's like, constantly inviting him to buck's parties or to watch him rodeo or to go see a movie. lightly manhandling johnny (arm over the shoulder, hand under his chin to kiss him when they're alone, running his fingers through his hair, etc)

johnny.... hm. i think he's not as much of an action-oriented person. like i think he pays attention, he likes knowing where dally is and being able to tell what kind of mood he's in. i think he's big on compliments. "you sure can cuss good" and all that. i think he compliments dally like, at least once a day and dally preens over it.

together tho, i think they're very emotionally vulnerable with each other. dally opens up about how hard shit has been for him, and johnny validates him (cue another compliment). also, johnny is canonically quiet but as a certified quiet bitch myself i think johnny really opens up once he's comfortable, and dally makes an effort to make johnny comfortable. dally is one of the only people who johnny can bitch to/with.

on that note, they must have talked about how much they miss the curtis parents after they died -- johnny's "leave em alone, dal" at the drive in didn't come from nowhere! i guarentee that they've talked about 1. how much they miss the curtises, 2. how much dally misses having someone tell him to cut that shit out, and 3. how much johnny does get irritated sometimes that dally is such an asshole. to me that moment at the drive in was absolutely not the first time something like that has happened, just the first time pony witnessed it, and i think those are the sort of conversations happened a lot.

dally i think is less good about actually expressing his feelings, like it doesn't come naturally to him at all, but he also says the sappiest most heartfelt shit ever but ONLY when they're alone. "you're so - my day was shitty but now you're here. so. it's better."

I’ve been thrust back into my love for The Outsiders ever since I discovered that there was a musical adaptation a couple months ago so hello Jally nation! I’m still going through my old bookmarks and reading new fics, but here are ten of my favorites so far!

what you can't learn from skin mags by ficfucker (5.2k words, Complete): I love how this fic shows Dally's meaner side when he's not around the gang and just rolling around town. The guy's a menace to society, but we love him anyway! Lots of soft moments with Johnny too.

goin' together by ficfucker (3.3k words, Complete): A nice little follow-up to the previous rec. Dally and Johnny tell the gang about their relationship and it goes as well as those two could hope for.

Liquid Smooth by dyingpoet (2.6k words, Complete): Dally's drunk and he's more honest with Johnny than he usually is. It's a little angsty during the first half but it's super sweet during the other half.

Haircuts by dyingpoet (2.3k words, Complete): Johnny cuts Dally's hair and so much fluff ensues! The bits and pieces that he reveals about his and Dally's relationship in this fic absolutely melts my heart. I always come back to read this before I go to bed, as a little bedtime story lol.

He's a Friend of Dorothy by dyingpoet (3.2k words, Complete): First off, the title alone is fantastic, 10/10 would not change a thing. Secondly, the way in which this fic touches on Johnny's internalized homophobia as his relationship with Dally progresses is just *chef's kiss*. Super sweet ending as well.

Role Models by dyingpoet (2.8k words, Complete): A Dally POV for a change! And it's awesome! Soda basically voices his concerns about Dally potentially influencing Johnny in a negative way and Dally takes it to heart. Writing a Dally POV is very hard in my opinion but this author manages to pull it off with so much ease.

Reaction Time by dyingpoet and Elder_Higgins (3.6k words, Complete): Dally teaches Johnny how to fight. Lots of sweet interactions with the rest of the gang too. It's the perfect balance between humor and seriousness.

this life ain't no love song by lexisaurus (5.8k words, Complete): Another great Dally POV fic! Johnny's the center of Dally's world but the weight of Johnny's love for him is almost too much to handle. It's soft, it's fluffy, it's a little bit angsty, and it's a beautiful examination of Dally's character above all else.

you've been a-hauntin' my dreams by lexisaurus (3.6k words, Complete:): Just some sickly sweet Jally. I swear I had cavities when I finished this fic haha.

they said you were the crooked kind by lexisaurus (5.2k words, Complete): Boy did this one leave me completely wrecked by the end. This is the only fic on this list with an "unhappy" ending, but if you're looking for something that feels more canon-compliant, I can't recommend this fic enough.
